Never will this day come again-

- and for what is to become no one can say. Joy, tears, hope, fears. All we can say is that what becomes of today is rooted in our choice, our acts, our will…for the things goverened by our will. AND for those things outside our will. What will we DO to influence or impact those things?

Someone was rude, what do I DO? Someone succeeded, what do I DO? Someone hurts, what do I DO?

The news is bad, what do I THINK? There is a debate, what do I THINK? I was second best, what do I THINK?

I am asked, ‘what are my strengths?’ what do I SAY? I am told ‘Sorry you don’t have expereience’, what do I SAY? I made a mistake, what do I SAY?

What becomes of today? What you DO, THINK, and SAY! AND, the good news is you CHOOSE what to do, think, and say.

The joy in a bright smile, or a breath of fresh air. The tears of mourning a dear pet or loved one. The hope of new love, new life. The fear of not being right.

We cannot say this moment, this hour- what will become of today.

We can only control ourselves, live the the POWER of those choices.

Make it happen. Prepare for the goals you want to acheive. Tell me what you want to acheive AND tell me how you’ll acheive what you want. I cannot control your success or failure. I cannot pur words in your mouth, I cannot do more for your than you.

What will you DO?

Radi-CAL advice

Going with a theme:  Ready?

CAL (Career And Life) - I love words that end in ‘ical’, not sure why.  Logophiles can access a full list of these words at: http://www.rdrop.com/users/half/Creations/Writings/Rants/Ical.html

To me, Radi-CAL means looking at the world in a completely new way.  Examine each event, story, fact with genuine curiosity and it is amazing how one can see 2 or 3 sides to anything.

This is Practi-CAL for anyone who is trying to survive in an ever changing world with demands on time, energy, money, attention.

As our world gets smaller, and we compete with workers all over the world, (see information referencing Thomas Friedman’s The World is Flat http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_World_is_Flat (among many others) we have to develop flexible thinking and adaptability.

RARE, I dare to say.

I apply this each time I hear someone say, “This can’t be done” or “I’ve tried that…”  Any obstacle one faces can be shattered with persistence and with Radi-CAL thinking.

You can find tons of advice for sale.  This is free:  Don’t settle for Typi-CAL, take action to fulfill your dreams in both Career And Life.  That is what the Career Connection Weblog is here to help you do!

Don’t take my word for it!

“Trust, but verify”

The words of Ronald Reagan.  And this ties in nicely with what I see today NOT happening.  Somehow we get ideas into our minds, and once there, they are nearly impossible to bend, move or change.

A great coaching blog I have found is called “Hello My Name is…Blog” a new link to be posted on blogroll today.  On October 17, Scott Ginsberg uses humor to show how easily we can be influenced, and how often we forget to “verify”.

http://hellomynameisscott.blogspot.com/2007/10/voted-best-buffet.html

Let us not forget to probe the who, what, when, where, why and how? of the tons of advice, news, politics, and debates we encounter each day.

I offer these thoughts, in hopes that when faced with new information we disagree with, or when adamantly making a “point” we remember to examine how we arrived at this belief, and I hope that we can all consider the other possible viewpoint.

Don’t take my word for it!  Only through experience does one grow and adapt to new ideas.

Where to go for advice:

I think most people actually resist getting or using “advice” despite the fact that “we” are out here doling it out by the bucket load.

My belief is that there are so many RIGHT ways to (___________) “fill in the blank”, whether it’s write a resume, prepare for an interview, or conduct a job search.  So, take in  LOTS of expertise, and act on the advice that fits you best.

Here are some blogs that I have found to be fun and full of insight and that ring true to my experience.  Try ‘em:

The “Brazen Careerist” Penelope Trunk’s blog:  http://blog.penelopetrunk.com/

Monster.com’s career blog:  http://monster.typepad.com/monsterblog/

And, Quint Careers, loaded with great information:  http://www.quintcareers.com/career_blog/

Once you take an hour or so to dig into a topic, the ideas that result are endless.  Go there first, and then for more “career advice” why not see what your favorite college career center is saying?

I’ll end with this:  Many experts share the web with me.  But when writing a resume, preparing for an interview, or conducting a job search, I recognize what the objective IS:  For you to get the call, win a job offer, and identify solid company targets.  Anything less is wasted, but the effort you put in will directly impact the results you seek.

Let’s talk about further-  Post your questions/ comments/ suggested links.  I learn each day from you.Plus, I need your help…I’m figuring a way to offer the Alan E. Guarantee:  I want readers to connect with me and other experts and land the results they want…more to come on that one!

Kickoff: Career Connections

October 8, 2007 at 1:04 am | Posted in Networking | Leave a comment

Not to be read and forgotten – but read and re-read.  The whistle blew, the ball is in the air, and you’re about to catch it.  AND RUN!

Let’s get one thing straight, from the kickoff.  This space is designed for questions, opinions, and experiences that have yielded success for someone somewhere.  If these short posts can get people connected, guide folks toward the right questions and people eventually connect in meaningful ways, then THIS is a successful game.

I’d like to throw out some starter questions, and learn from you what questions have worked for you.  Today’s Connection Topic:  Networking.

OK, I don’t mean going up to your neighbor or sister and asking:  Do you have any jobs I can apply for?

NO:  I mean, asking the following questions to your neighbor, sister, whomever you meet:

  • What’s exciting in your world today?
  • What is your present career?
  • I’m exploring _________ career options.  Any suggestions for me to get started?

It’s the action of connecting that matters.  You won’t always like what you hear, you won’t always get a good answer, but you will have a new insight.  Take it or leave it, but if you don’t ask, you don’t have the option.

Good luck, and share your questions that have worked to start the networking roll for you.
